Juan,
the first Argentine astronaut

First Argentine astronaut

On December 23, 1969, at 6:30 a.m., the Canopus II sounding rocket was successfully launched with Juan the monkey as crew member on an eight-minute suborbital flight (it did not enter orbit). The rocket climbed to a height of almost 90 kilometers, brushing the boundary between the Earth's atmosphere and outer space.

A space odyssey

The launch was made from the Chamical Self-Propelled Projectile Launch and Experimentation Centre in La Rioja. Juan had a special seat at the tip of the rocket, in an inclined position so that he would not be affected by accelerations and decelerations. The capsule also had a cooling system.
